Well I can’t believe we are in Spring Term 2 already. What an amazing first week we have had!

This week we introduced our new value of the half term. The focus value is inspiration. We talked about what this meant and how we could be an inspiration and show inspiration as well as talking about those that inspire us.

In English this week we introduced our new text called Lost and Found by the author Oliver Jeffers. We spent the week completing lots of booktalk to help us really understand the story, it’s structure and key events. We used VIPERS questions to help us with this, as well as talk for writing using actions and pictures to orally retell the story. Following this, we used role-play and sequencing to identify the main events and the sequence in which they happen.

In maths, we have started to look at fractions. We learnt that a fraction is equal parts of a whole. We focused on finding a half of a shape or object practically before moving on to answering questions pictorially and using our knowledge of halves to answer problem solving and reasoning questions. Once secure with this, we moved onto finding half of a quantity practically, remembering that when we find half we divide into two equal groups. We again applied this to different question types. Next week we will begin to look at finding quarters.

In Science, we have started our new topics of everyday materials. This week we looked at identifying different materials and understanding the difference between an object and the material it is made from. We focused on the materials, wood, plastic, metal, rubber and glass.

In Geography, we have been learning about the four countries of the United Kingdom. We were able to label England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales on a map of the UK. We also learned what a country is and what an island is.

In DT, our topic this half term is dips and dippers. This week we evaluated different dips, talking about the texture and taste. We created a tally chart of our favourite dips.

This week was also World Book Day. We had a fantastic day celebrating books and the importance of reading. We looked at a variety of different texts. We used role play, hot seating and P4C to delve further into the books. We also enjoyed buddy reading with Year 2.

Thank you for all your book donations.

Have a wonderful weekend.
