We have been working really hard on our phase 2 and phase 3 sounds. Please continue to practice these at the start of every phonics session. If your child is doing really well with the sounds, for each one ask them to tell you a word that begins with the sound. When you are recapping digraphs at school, we have talked about where they come words. At the beginning, middle, end or both. For example ‘ch’ can be at the beginning, middle and end (chicken, teacher, match) whereas ‘qu’ usually only comes at the beginning of a word.
Now we can move on to our memory words. Go through each memory word and see how many you can remember independently. Focus on the memory words your child has struggled with.
This week we will be learning a new sound ‘ai’ This digraph is made with ‘a’ and ‘I’. Our two letters that make one sound.
The digraph ‘ai’ usually comes in the middle of a word. Before we start, can you think of any words with the ‘ai’ sound?
Mr throne is ready with some new words for you. Watch the video below to learn all about ‘ai’
What new words did you learn?
We are now going to have a go at reading some words and sentences with the 'ai' sound. Below are the words to read. If your chid is confident reading the words, ask them to read the short sentences below. Remember to segment and blend your words together, you can use your robot arms like we do at school to help .
Biff help to sail the ship.
Dad got the mail.
The dog has a tail.
The rain did not stop.
Well done Reception! Now it is time to practice our writing. You have learnt lots of new words with the 'ai' sound you may choose your favourites to write. Make sure you are starting on the line in your books. All letters must be pre-cursive and have clear ascenders and descenders. Remember we are all at different stages of our learning and you will know what your child needs to work on. If they are unable to form letters yet they need to be practicing the Pre-writing shapes. If they have worked well on these practice writing just the 'ai' sound.
If they are confidently completing the pre- writing shapes they need to move on to writing the words below. Please focus on staying on the line, and writing Pre-cursive letters. use the mat below to support.
Some children will be writing captions. There focus is to use finger spaces in their writing as well as recognising the ai digraph they are writing.
the snail was on a stick
mum paid the bill
the cat has a tail
well done, you can have a little break and move on to our morning task.
