Phonics

 

We begin every Monday with a more in-depth recap of previous learning then other days due to a break over the weekend, you should now know where your child is with their sound knowledge and what sounds they need to practise. If your child is still recognising phase 2 sounds then please continue to practise this and discuss words which begin with that sound. If your child is confident with phase 2 sounds and is working within phase 3, then recap all sounds especially those new digraphs qu and ch. you may want to recap the children reading words from those previous sessions such as: quit, quack, chip and chick

Then it is to recap memory words, words which the children cannot sound out they just have to know them, if your child does not know the phase 2 sounds please focus on these before moving to phase 3.

 

Then practise segmenting and blending, you may want to use your reading book for this or access your Bug club account as these are at the correct stage for your child, some children are still reading simple words whilst others are now read captions and sentences, please do to the ability of your child, if you need any support then please ask.

 

Today's focus is another digraph (two letters that make one sound), today is all about 'sh', you will find this sound mainly at the beginning or end of words at the children's time of phonics knowledge. Lots of parents commented on how much the children loved Mr Thorne's video so here is one all about 'sh', enjoy smiley

Now writing on a line we want the children to practise writing 'sh', pre cursively on the line, making sure that the 'h' is tall as it is a descender, the children should keep practising to get it correct.

Now the children should practise reading their new digraph, reading the words:

ship, shop, shed, shell, fish

If the children are confident with the reading of the 'sh' words they can then try to write the words below, as always using their phonics knowledge to listen to the sounds carefully to write them, the children should remain focused on their letter formation.

To finish the children can complete a game on 'phonics play' using the log in details we gave last week, this should be a game focusing on the 'sh' digraph.

 

Once you are all finished it is now, snack time before your morning task smiley
