Children take part in guided reading sessions during their English lessons. In Lower Key Stage 2 this occurs daily, with each group of children reading at least twice a week. In upper Key Stage 2 the children do a week of Guided Reading and 2 weeks of Reading Skills.
Guided Reading is a half hour session in which the teacher works with a group of children who are reading at the same level. The teacher chooses a book at the correct level for the children and they spend time reading it. The teacher is checking the children's ability to decode (read) the book and also their level of comprehension (understanding). The children are then asked a series of questions to answer either verbally or in writing, which show their understanding of the text.
Guided Reading has an important role to play as not only does it ensure that the teacher is regularly listening to all of the children read, but also it develops the children's self - confidence and ability to read out loud in front of others.
