Application of Reading Skills
Children take part in guided reading sessions daily.
This guided reading session is a 20 minute session in which the teacher works with a group of children who are reading at the same level. The teacher chooses a book at the correct level for the children and they spend time reading it. The teacher is checking the children's ability to decode (read) the book and also their level of comprehension (understanding). The children are then asked a series of questions to answer either verbally or in writing, which show their understanding of the text.
These sessions have an important role to play as not only does it ensure that the teacher is regularly listening to all of the children read, but also it develops the children's self - confidence and ability to comprehend.
